(Washington, DC) — On Monday, President Biden signed an Executive Order on advancing biotechnology and biomanufacturing innovation for a sustainable, safe, and secure American Bioeconomy. Today the White House is hosting a Summit on biotechnology and biomanufacturing. The bioeconomy represents the intersection of products and services that come from biological resources. In August, Chairwoman Johnson’s Bioeconomy Research and Development Act became law as a provision within the CHIPS and Science Act.

“President Biden’s Executive Order to advance biotechnology and biomanufacturing is a critical step forward in meeting the moment and securing a strong future for our bioeconomy,” said Chairwoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX). “Innovations in our bioeconomy will address our greatest challenges, from human health to the climate crisis to food security. We have so much to gain by supporting advancements to our bioeconomy, including by investing in research and development that will power innovation in the bioeconomy.

“Just last month President Biden signed the CHIPS and Science Act, which was largely made up of legislation that started in the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology,” Chairwoman Johnson continued. “The CHIPS and Science Law includes the Bioeconomy Research and Development Act, a bill I first introduced in 2015. The Bioeconomy R&D Act establishes a national initiative and builds a foundation for U.S. leadership in the bioeconomy for decades to come. Our bioeconomy will drive the 21st century global economy, and we must move forward in building a coordinated national strategy that enables us to lead.”
