Science and Technology at the Forefront of the America COMPETES Act of 2022

On Tuesday, the House posted text of the America Creating Opportunities for Manufacturing, Pre-Eminence in Technology and Economic Strength Act of 2022. The America COMPETES Act of 2022 includes a historic investment to surge production of American-made semiconductors, tackles supply chain vulnerabilities to make more goods in America, bolsters America’s scientific research and technological leadership, and strengthens America’s economic and national security at home and abroad. The America COMPETES Act of 2022 includes transformative, bipartisan legislation from the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology.

“The United States has long been a beacon of excellence in science and engineering. If we’re going to continue to lead, the time is now to chart our own course. That’s what my colleagues and I in the House plan to do with the America COMPETES Act of 2022. I am so proud of the bipartisan Science Committee provisions that are included in this package. Our bills were built from the ground up with rigorous input from the scientific community on what they need most to succeed in the 21st century. They will bolster our nation’s competitiveness and reaffirm our global leadership in innovation and technology. These transformative investments in science and innovation will help us to revitalize our research infrastructure, create STEM opportunities for all, build clean energy solutions, address the climate crisis, reinforce our national security, enhance our semiconductor manufacturing capabilities, and so much more. By leveraging our scientific investments and talent to develop solutions that improve the lives of each and every American — including those in historically underserved communities — we help ensure the durability of our leadership.”

- Chairwoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX)

SST Members Applaud the America COMPETES Act

“I have long pushed to support this critical industry and am thrilled by the inclusion of my bipartisan microelectronics legislation in our America COMPETES Act. This sweeping action will expand scientific research and development, create quality jobs, and chart a course for American leadership and competitiveness abroad.”

- Rep. Paul Tonko (D-NY)

“When we incentivize domestic manufacturing and make things here in America, we can get rid of supply chain issues and lower prices for Michigan families, seniors and small businesses. I’ve been leading bipartisan efforts in Congress to strengthen U.S. supply chains and address the semiconductor shortage, including for Michigan’s automotive industry and workers.”

- Rep. Dan Kildee (D-MI)

“Our nation has long been a global leader in science and technology, buoyed by companies and universities like those in the Research Triangle performing cutting-edge research every day. However, maintaining this position requires significant investment and cooperation across the government and private sector. That is why I am pleased the America COMPETES Act includes several of my bipartisan bills to fund technology research activities, facilitate public-private partnerships to grow clean energy tech, support the production of semiconductors, and much more.”

- Rep. Deborah Ross (D-NC)
